The Yiaku people, an indigenous community living in the Mukogodo forest in Laikipia North, have developed a strategic plan for 2022 to 2027. The plan aims to promote sustainable development, cultural preservation, and community empowerment through initiatives such as eco-tourism, natural resource management, and education. The Yaaku people hope to achieve self-sufficiency while preserving their cultural identity and unique way of life.

Usually referred to as ‘Bio-cultural Community Protocol’ (BCP), a community protocol also contains information on the community’s customary way of life, knowledge of resources and use of biodiversity. They support communities to assert their rights and duties in respect of how they govern their territories, as well as conserve and sustainably use their natural resources.
