- Promoting Cultural Practices and Human Rights-

At Yiaku Laikipiak Trust, we believe in preserving our cultural heritage while advocating for the dignity and rights of every member of our community. Our goal is to ensure that the traditions, knowledge, and values of the Yiaku people are not only protected but also respected within modern society.
Preserving Indigenous Culture and Identity.
The Yiaku community holds a deep cultural connection to the Mukogodo Forest, which has shaped our identity for generations. We promote cultural preservation through:
1. Reviving the Yiaku Language by documenting it and teaching it to the younger generation.
2. Sharing Traditional Knowledge, such as herbal medicine, beekeeping, forest survival skills, and indigenous conservation practices.
3. Hosting Cultural Events that showcase Yiaku songs, dances, ceremonies, and oral storytelling. These efforts strengthen our sense of identity and pass valuable heritage to future generations.
Promoting Human Rights and Equality
Our trust is committed to upholding the rights of all people in our community — with a focus on:
1. Indigenous Rights: We advocate for recognition, land rights, and cultural freedom as outlined in the Kenyan Constitution and international declarations.
2. Gender Equality: We support women’s leadership and empower girls through education and community engagement.
3. Children and Elders: We ensure the protection, care, and respect of children and elderly members of the community. We promote awareness of legal rights and help our people understand how to speak out and seek justice when their rights are violated.
Linking Culture with Human Rights.
For the Yiaku, cultural practices and human rights are not separate — they go hand in hand. Protecting our language, traditions, and sacred forest is part of protecting our human dignity. Our programs encourage:
> Respect for diversity and indigenous identity.
> Community involvement in decision-making.
> Sustainable cultural practices that benefit both people and the environment.
Working with Partners.
To make a lasting impact, we work with local leaders, government institutions, NGOs, and international organizations. Together, we aim to ensure that the Yiaku people’s voice is heard, our culture is respected, and our rights are protected.
“Culture gives us strength. Human rights give us freedom. At Yiaku Laikipiak Trust, we fight for both.”
