- Your Safety-
At Yiaku Laikipiak Trust (YLT), the safety and wellbeing of our community members, partners, researchers, and visitors is of the highest importance. As custodians of the Mukogodo Forest and proud protectors of our culture and environment, we are committed to creating a secure, respectful, and welcoming environment for all.
Respect for Community and Culture.
Mukogodo is home to the Yiaku people, whose traditions, beliefs, and way of life are deeply connected to the forest. When you visit or engage with the Trust:
Always seek guidance from local elders or YLT representatives before entering sacred areas or conducting any activities. Ask for consent before taking photos of individuals or homesteads. Avoid giving money or gifts directly to children. Engage through community-approved structures.
Environmental Safety.
Mukogodo Forest is a living ecosystem that must be approached with care:
1. Stay on marked footpaths or routes guided by local rangers and community guides.
2. Do not start fires, collect plants, or disturb wildlife without approval.
3. Dispose of all waste responsibly. We promote a zero-litter policy.
4. Inform a local guide, local rangers or YLT representative of your movement within the forest for your safety.
Health and Emergency.
While we strive to make your visit safe, it’s important to be prepared:
> Carry drinking water, mosquito repellent, and suitable clothing for forest conditions.
> In case of a medical emergency, the nearest health facilities are located in Doldol and Nanyuki. YLT can assist in contacting emergency services if needed.
> For long forest visits, it’s advisable to bring a basic first aid kit for your safety.
Security and Conduct.
We work closely with local security partners to ensure a safe environment. However:
Avoid venturing into the forest alone or at night. If you’re part of a research, conservation, or tourism group, always check in and out with YLT personnel where possible, and your guide. Visitors should have valid identification or travel documents and respect local protocols.
Children, Vulnerable Groups & Safeguarding.
Yiaku Laikipiak Trust is dedicated to protecting the rights of children and vulnerable groups. All partners, volunteers, and workers must comply with our Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy. Any inappropriate behavior or abuse will be reported and handled in line with national and international child protection standards.
